GB Energy Bill to include Community Energy

Sharing the great news that the GB Energy bill has been amended to include support for UK community energy projects

At Ethex, we are thrilled to hear that the Great British Energy Bill has been amended to include support for community energy initiatives. This milestone marks a significant step toward recognising and strengthening the role of community-owned energy in the UK’s transition to a sustainable future. The Bill establishes the Great British Energy Company, a crucial component of the UK’s clean energy transition.

With an £8 billion investment planned for the sector in the coming years, ensuring that community energy projects receive support alongside larger developments is vital. We commend the efforts of Power for People and their supporters, who worked tirelessly for six months to secure this amendment by mobilising public and parliamentary backing. Their dedication has delivered a meaningful victory for the sector.

Steve Shaw from Power for People says:
"The inclusion of community energy in the Bill is a testament to the persistent advocacy of grassroots organisations and the undeniable benefits these projects bring to local communities."

Hugh Goulbourne from CO2Sense adds:
"This amendment is a pivotal development for community energy, not only reinforcing its essential role in the UK’s clean energy future but also opening up new opportunities for communities to take control of their energy, cut costs and build a more sustainable future".

This amendment comes at a time of optimism for the sector, as highlighted in the latest Community Energy England State of the Sector report. The report heralds a "new dawn for community energy," aligning with Labour’s ambitious and practical net-zero commitments. The sector has made remarkable progress, with impressive achievements in 2023:
  • 165,980 tonnes of CO2 saved (a 129% increase since 2017)
  • £12.9 million contributed to local economies
  • £4.4 million in energy bill savings
Ethex is proud to have been at the forefront of supporting community-owned energy projects for over a decade. Our community of investors has helped fund more than 95 projects, channelling over £95 million into the sector. This support has been instrumental in overcoming financing barriers and enabling the growth of clean energy initiatives.

Through our platform, positive investors have backed projects like Grimsby Community Energy, whose share offer is funding solar installations on local community buildings. These projects not only reduce carbon emissions and cut energy costs but also reinvest in their communities through benefit funds.

The amendment to the Great British Energy Bill is a promising step toward a fairer, more sustainable energy future. At Ethex, we remain committed to driving forward community energy, ensuring it plays a central role in the UK’s path to net zero and a just, clean energy transition.
