Crowd-powered clean energy in 2025

How are you feeling about action on climate change in the year ahead? Optimistic? Hopeful? Or maybe a bit helpless? At Ethex, we're starting the year on a positive footing, looking forward to supporting some incredible community energy organisations to reach their funding goals.

We believe in a green and inclusive future for all, and we're excited to be part of the movement toward community-owned clean energy transitions.

This January, Ethex is proud to list four renewable energy investment opportunities supporting a range of clean energy projects accelerating our net-zero goals, empowering communities, educating future generations, and stimulating local economies.

Here’s a quick look at the inspiring projects we're supporting:

Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy is raising funds to install solar panels on Silverwood School for children with special needs. This project will generate around 484,000 kWh of clean energy, with excess being sold back to the grid, creating funds to support educational projects.

Grimsby Community Energy is working to provide three more community buildings with solar panels, saving community organisations £24,000 annually on bills and mitigating 89 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Solar for Schools CBS installs solar panels on schools at no cost, saving money on energy bills and cutting carbon emissions.  Their education programs teach pupils the importance of sustainability, empowering change in future generations.

Stockwood CBS, although not a community energy organisation, is home to a business park that generates its own clean energy, powering the 28 work units that, along with the organically managed Rush Farm, make up the CBS.

Investors in these projects are empowering communities to own their clean energy transitions, proving that financial returns and environmental impact can go hand in hand, accelerating the UK's ambitions to create a green and inclusive future for all.

We're also filled with positivity looking at the highlights from the Community Energy England State of the Sector report overview, which welcomes a 'new dawn for community energy’ with Labour's ambitious and practical commitment to net zero.

Here are just a few of the amazing accomplishments of the community energy sector in 2023:

* 165,980 tonnes of CO2 saved (+129% since 2017)
* Contributed £12.9 million to local economies
* Created savings of 4.4 million on energy bills

While the report identifies funding as one of the major obstacles to growth in the sector, Ethex aims to bring more positive investors on board to help us fund the growth in this vital sector. According to the report, there are 79 stalled projects that communities want to deliver, and we believe that together we can help make these projects (and more) a reality.

We hope this has whet your appetite to support community power in 2025. If you are interested in community energy, you can watch a short collection of highlights from our recent webinar here, where a panel of experts discussed the opportunities for community-owned energy in 2025 and beyond.
