Energise Barnsley
Society no. 7180
Barnsley, UK
Incorporation date: 30 July 2015

Your money will…

  • Tackle climate change by enabling Energise Barnsley to reduce carbon emissions in the Barnsley area through rooftop solar and smart battery installation.

  • Reduce levels of fuel poverty in the area, particularly among elderly residents, by cutting energy bills.

  • Support vital community initiatives through the Community Energy Fund, funded by profits from the generation of renewable electricity.

  • Earn a potential return. Investments in the bond offer target a return of 4%.

The bigger picture

In order for the UK to meet net-zero targets, we need to significantly increase renewable energy production. Energise Barnsley is an established community rooftop solar project that has installed solar panels on 100’s of council-owned properties in the Barnsley area, including over 320 council homes.

As well as generating clean, renewable energy for the area the project (the largest joint local authority and community energy project in the UK) has a huge social impact too. Residents and local businesses enjoy cheaper energy bills as a result and 100% of the profits created from the energy generation are funneled back into the community via the Community Energy Fund. To date the project has:

  • Generated over 5,513MWhs of clean energy, saving 2,922+ tonnes of CO2,
  • Created over £278,844 of collective savings for tenants on their electricity bills,
  • Installed 150 smart batteries, generating an additional £300,000 in energy bill savings,
  • Generated over £79,000 surplus income to fund community initiatives.

Where your money goes

It’s your money so it follows that you want to know where it goes and what kind of impact you’re making. Energise Barnsley will use your investment to;

  • Ensure the project continues with a significant share of community ownership by refinancing existing lending.
  • Continue to generate clean electricity and contribute towards the UK net-zero targets.
  • Help to ensure local residents and businesses continue to benefit from lower energy bills, tackling the issue of fuel poverty in the area.
  • Educate more local people and businesses on the benefits of renewable energy generation and help fund new community initiatives.
