The Ecological Land Cooperative (ELC) is a community benefit society based in Brighton that is pioneering a better way of farming and food production for the future. They have helped create 5 thriving ecologically-friendly small farm sites around the UK covering almost 100 acres, that support a new generation of sustainable food producers. Through funds raised via community shares, the cooperative purchases land, obtains planning permission for agriculturally tied dwellings and provides affordable leases to new farmers who foster ecologically sound farming skills and produce good, sustainable food for local markets.
We need to act urgently to improve how we manage land. ELC’s passionate and innovative farmers can do this while producing healthy food for local people. By supporting us you are supporting rural communities, nature and the climate.
The big numbers
- Almost £1million raised via 2 share offers, exceeding their original target
- Returned 99 acres of land to ecological farming practices
- Managing 5 sites from Cornwall to East Sussex, and the Gower to Somerset
- Creating 15 ecological small farms that provide up to 30 people with the opportunity to establish low-impact, land-based livelihoods that otherwise would have been beyond their financial reach
- Delivered over 2,800 local veg boxes in 2020 - giving people access to good quality, locally produced food such as vegetables, herbal medicine, goats’ cheese and apples
- Planning to create 18 new small farms on six new sites by the end of 2023
