Representatives from these community-centric organisations will be chatting to us about the reasons for their raises, the positive impact they’re making in their local communities and how their members are at the heart of everything they do.
We will be chatting to Helen and Martyn from Bunker Housing, an organisation that has been set up and is run by its members – a group of low income Brighton & Hove residents who have come together to build housing for rents they can actually afford, taking decisive action against the city’s housing crisis. Their members are both the landlords and tenants of the homes they build. Homes which they then manage co-operatively.
They have already created two quality, sustainable and affordable homes in the area and they are looking to raise £150,000 to enable them to build 2 more, as the next stage of their overall plan to create 9 homes for low-income families and individuals. Helen and Martyn will talk about the need for this kind of housing in the area as well as the benefits of co-operatively owned and run housing.
They will be joined by Micaela from The Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford’s oldest and only independent cinema. Opened in 1911, the cinema is now run by a small and passionate team of staff and volunteers and is supported by hundreds of local members. The UPPCC Community Benefit Society is now raising funds through a community share offer to purchase the business for the local community and allow the cinema to continue to thrive well into the future.
Representatives of both organisations will give a bit of background to their respective raises and will answer questions from the audience in what is sure to be a really interesting chat. So register, grab your cuppa and join us on 18th May at 12:30 to hear more.
